The Journey So Far…

Born in Northern California and raised on Bruce Lee and Shaw Brothers, the martial arts have always held my fascination. While in elementary school, I dabbled in American karate and during high school, thanks to Steven Seagal, I was able to learn basic ukemi in Aikido.  In college, I finally made the decision to take the martial arts with some seriousness. With the fortune of being able to train under Joan Neide Sensei (Uechi Ryu Kyoshi Hachidan) and Robb Van der Volgen Sensei (Uechi Ryu Kyoshi Hachidan) it would have been impossible for me to train under better circumstances.

In 2010, I was fortunate to find myself in the Yokosuka. Training under Keisuke Fujimoto Sensei (Uechi Ryu Kyoshi Nanadan), I was able to establish ties with Okinawa. And since 2012, I have continued to train karate in Okinawa under Shintoku Takara Sensei (Uechi Ryu Hanshi Judan) and Kazuya Takara Sensei (Uechi Ryu Kyoshi Nanadan). For Okinawan Kobudo I am currently training under Kensho Kina Sensei (Uechi Ryu Kyoshi Hachidan) and was also lucky enough to train under the late Honorable Sensei Shinzaburo Okuhama (Uechi Ryu Hanshi Kyudan).

On a whim in July 2015, I found myself in Datu Rommel Cortezano’s IKCC class at Kadena AFB. It was an eye opening experience. Filipino Martial Arts and the IKCC philosophy and methods have brought a new aspect to my training. Seeing combatives through the IKCC lens has allowed me to let go my own preconceived limitations and experience the martial way with clarity and renewed vigor.

Training Group Leader Wendell Brown

Born in Wilmington, NC, but was raised in Darien GA. I have had an interest in martial arts since I was young but never pursued it until fairly recently.  I began IKCC in February 2015 after deciding to finally commit to some sort of martial arts training, preferably one that would help me defend myself in a dire situation. I found Datu Rommel Cortezano’s class online on the Kadena Air Base website and chose to give it a shot. After my first class I was hooked and very quickly saw the training as practical as well as fun. I am currently working on further developing my skills in IKCC as well broadening my scope by training other martial art forms.
